About Louise's Nutty Tart
On the 10th August 2010 Louise appeared on ITV's 'Britain's Best Dish' with a specially modified version of her Nuttty Tart - the recipe of which can be found at www.itv.com.
'Louise's Nutty Tart' however is based upon the traditional Yorkshire Nutty Tart recipe that has been in Louise's family for generations.
It is basic and wholesome, nutty and delicious(and happily a bit cheaper to make than the deluxe
version invented for 'Britain's Best Dish').
It is not a treacle tart. Far more sophisticated than the ancient Bakewell, it is a celebration of nuts and everything nutty.
'When I present it people think they are going to get a kind of pecan pie but soon realise it is totally different. Less sweet more complex and English to the kernel.'
History
No one knew what was in Grandma's nutty tart, until I asked her that is! I changed her gooseberry jam to apricot, or sometimes plum or even greengage. I updated the rest of the ingredients somewhat then made it over and over until I got a recipe that was even better than hers! It’s my fantasy of mine that I might be the creator of Camberwell's answer to the very inferior Bakewell Tart.
Everyone who tastes it says "It is soooo much better than a Bakewell!!"
Nutty tart is simply, unbelievably moreish. It feels like a forgotten classic that comes from the pages of history. Surely it should shoot from antiquity to Britain’s number one? Its golden crunchy pastry textured almond filling and toasted walnuts gets the table to fall silent just for a moment every single time it is served. In fact I challenge the inferior Bakewell Tart to a duel !
A secret recipe
There are loads of charming stories about it in my Yorkshire born family.
It is a tradition.
Until now it has been very much a secret recipe!
Although it’s got a stupid name it's so addictive!
